Professor Soares Magalhães is a veterinarian (LMV) and an infectious disease epidemiologist (MSc) with qualifications in both human (Ph.D.) and veterinary public health (DiplECVPH).

He is a Zoonotic Disease Epidemiology and Biosecurity Professor at the University of Queensland (UQ) School of Veterinary Science and an affiliate of the UQ Children’s Health and Environment Program. He heads the UQ Queensland Alliance for One Health Sciences and is the Analytics Program Lead of the Australian Collaborative Research Centre for Solving Antimicrobial in Agribusinesses, Food, and Environments (CRC SAAFE).

He is an internationally recognized leading researcher in the spatial epidemiology of zoonoses and emerging infectious diseases with +200 lifetime peer-reviewed articles. He has worked as a Technical Advisor to the WHO Southeast Asian Regional Office on Biosecurity and Emerging Threats and International Consultant to the World Bank on the Bank's Global Biosecurity and Pandemic Threats Program.

Over the past few years, Professor Soares Magalhães research in collaboration with institutions and organizations across the Indo-Pacific region has influenced policy including the design of integrated surveillance protocols for zoonotic diseases (including AMR), development of spatial risk assessment approaches for risk-based surveillance of priority zoonoses, and the provision of technical expertise that led to policy guidance on enhanced biosecurity of live animal markets in the region.
